Acupressure

Most people are familiar with the concept of acupuncture but not many know of its non-invasive counterpart, Acupressure. While acupuncture employs the use of needles, acupressure is a healing modality which utilizes gentle pressure on various points on the body which stimulates energy and healing. The body is made up of a life-force energy called qi (pronounced key) or chi (pronounced chee). This energy travels throughout the body via pathways known as meridians. There are 14 meridians which flow through the body and these meridians correlate to specific organs. All along these meridians are hundreds of points (called acupoints). These points and meridians network throughout the body and connect the entire system. They enable the energy to flow smoothly throughout our bodies and perform life-sustaining functions. Stress, dis-ease, and illness, along with many other outside factors can cause blockages and imbalances in the flow of energy which can lead to pain, injuries, emotional distress, etc.

During an acupressure session, the practitioner will apply gentle pressure using their fingers, hands, etc. to various pressure points which will bring circulation of energy—and blood—to that point. Endorphins are released in the body due to this stimulation which aid in the relief of pain. And, much like other bodywork, toxins are also released (which is why clients should remain hydrated after receiving an acupressure session). Acupressure aids in both physical and mental relaxation as tensions are literally pressed from the body! The physical benefits of acupressure are too numerous to count: acupressure has been proven to relieve hypertension, boost the immune system, lessen the frequency and intensity of headaches/migraines, lower blood pressure, relieve pain associated with multiple sclerosis, neuralgia and fibromyalgia, treat anxiety and depression, and generally increase energy levels among other healing results. In conjunction with other modalities—or even used by itself—acupressure has virtually limitless possibilities!

Acupressure is an ancient healing art that has been practiced for over 5000 years! (A little realized fact is that acupressure actually predates it’s more well known counterpart of acupuncture by several thousand years.) Once ancient peoples found the correlation between certain points on the body and various ailments and illnesses, acupressure was born. Accounts of this healing modality have been found in ancient medical texts in China as well as the Vedic texts in ancient India. Acupressure, in conjunction with herbal remedies and essential oils, addressed both the medical and spiritual needs of ancient peoples.

While the physical and mental benefits of acupressure have been well documented over the past 5000 plus years, Western medicine is just now beginning to take a closer look at this healing modality. Hospitals and medical doctors in private practices are now beginning to encourage the use of acupressure and acupuncture as part of a regimen for pain management as well part of a healthy and balanced regimen for general wellness.

We hope that you explore the amazing health benefits of Acupressure and the other gentle energy bodywork modalities that we have outlined in this series. Until the next article, stay healthy!!

Animals/Pets Acupressure, Massage & Healing, Nutrition & Herbs

The bond between humans and domesticated animals is a strong one that dates back thousands of years. Our pets sometimes provide us with relationships that we are lacking in our lives…perhaps a best friend, a child, a protector or a playmate…and it all comes down to one thing…unconditional love. Yes, our pets love us unconditionally, through good times, bad times, illness, depression, etc… We are so connected with our pets that we often know what they are thinking and feeling, and they, us. There have been many books written about the healing affects that animals have on humans. Pet ownership can be a wonderful rewarding experience. Owning a pet can be a win-win situation for both the pet and the owner.

Because our pets are so loving and giving of themselves to us, we should also give back to them by making sure that they are in a safe, clean, happy environment, have a healthy diet, get the proper exercise and have yearly veterinarian check-ups. In addition to all of the above suggestions, acupressure and/or healings can assist in releasing any energy blockages in your pet’s body allowing your pet to have optimum health and live a long life which in turn provides you with years of pleasure and unconditional love.

Acupressure, massage and healings are terrific modalities to use on ill pets and healthy pets alike. The main reason for providing such healing sessions to a healthy pet is to keep them in optimum health. There are two reasons for providing healing sessions to an ill pet and they are: One is that any of the above mentioned modalities will open any energy blockages in yourpet’s body allowing a free flow of energy to return so that healing can occur. Two, the healing session will provide comfort to a seriously ill pet to make their transition easier and pain free.

Give your pet the gift of optimum health by providing them with an acupressure, massage and/orhealing session.

Nutrition and Herbs for Pets

Much like humans, animals can greatly benefit from the use of proper nutrition and herbs. As a Naturopath and Master Herbalist, Patricia has assisted in the healing of many animals through the use of nutrition and herbs. Many of the same herbs that are used on humans can be used on animals too.

Chakra Balancing

The word chakra comes from the language known as Sanskrit. Chakra means vortex, circle or spinning wheel. Chakras are the energy centers that balance, store and distribute life energies through our physical body along the subtle body. The subtle body is our non-physical body, known as our spirit or soul, which overlays our physical body.

The chakras, or energy circles, flow all through our body and assist in the running of our mind, body and spirit/soul. Although there are hundreds of chakras throughout the body, there are only seven major chakras. These seven chakras start at the base of the spine and run up to the crown of the head. They seem to coincide with the positions along the spinal cord of the major nerve ganglia in our physical body.

If a chakra is not performing correctly, this could cause physical, mental and spiritual imbalances in the body.

We, at Wholistic Wellness Associates, use various techniques, including music, tuning forks and color therapy, to bring the chakras into balance, which in turn can assist in the healing of the physical, mental and spiritual.

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis

Hypnosis is a technique used to achieve a relaxing and enjoyable experience. It is a natural and efficient waking state of mind in which our body and conscious mind become relaxed, and the mind becomes more aware and focused. Hypnosis is the same relaxed state of mind we enter daily when our brain-wave activity slows down to a frequency called alpha. We enter this state just before going to sleep and upon awakening, as well as in periods of meditation, daydreaming, and similar states of mind.

While in the alpha state, our creativity is enhanced as well as memory and the ability to imagine; our concentration efficiency is nearly perfect at a minimum of 95%. The subconscious becomes more accessible creating the possibility of change. In this state your subconscious opens, increasing the ability to respond and/or to accept positive suggestions and imagery.

Although the word “hypnosis” is derived from the Greek word Hypnos, meaning “sleep”, a person in hypnosis is not in a state of sleep but in a state of enhanced awareness. The person under hypnosis retains total control and awareness of his/her surroundings. Do not expect to go to sleep or to loose touch with reality.

You are always in control and accept only those suggestions that are beneficial to you. You do remember what you have said and done while in hypnosis. You will be aware of everything that is going on around you.

Hypnosis could be called guided “self hypnosis” because the power of control resides within the individual under hypnosis. In fact, on awakening, people express that they heard everything that was going on.

WHAT IS HYPNO-COUNSELING ?

Hypno-counseling uses hypnosis for the purpose of self improvement which allows you to clearly identify and solve your problems by tapping into your own inner wisdom. The role of the Hypno-counselor is to guide or lead you into hypnosis, facilitating your ability to use your imagination and to respond to simple, positive suggestions along with revealing the options you have for making choices that are right for your present life.

HYPNO-COUNSELING IS NOT THERAPY

A Hypno-counselor is not a psychological counselor or psychologist. Cognitive counseling deals with issues at the cognitive level, and many problems require just that. Hypno-counseling can work in conjunction with Therapists and Physicians for the well- being of the client. Hypno-counseling is extremely effective in changing bad habits and reducing stress. There is nothing faster than the use of hypnosis to facilitate these desired changes!

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE HYPNOTIZED ?

Hypnosis is relaxation and concentration; people feel physically relaxed and mentally alert. Your concentration level increases to almost 95%.

  • You are aware of everything that goes on around you – like background music, or the voice of the hypno-counselor.
  • You may feel mellow with no interest in arguing and no energy to move. Your breathing rate slows down and your eyes will close.
  • Most people feel very happy and alert, with their minds fresh, after being hypnotized.

ARE THE RESULTS PERMANENT ?

Some hypnotic suggestions stay with individuals indefinitely while others need reinforcement. The effects of hypnosis are cumulative: the more the techniques are practiced and post-hypnotic suggestions are brought into play, the more permanent the results become. In our first Hypno-counseling appointment you will be taught a self-relaxing technique for you to use at home to reinforce your desired results.

HOW POWERFUL IS A HYPNOTIST ?

Hypnosis is a situation of consent by the client in that they allow themselves to be hypnotized. The actual process takes about 10% effort from the hypnotist and 90% effort by the client. Therefore, a Hypnotist cannot force you to do anything that is against your will.

SOME TIPS ABOUT HYPNOSIS

First time clients will watch for the hypnosis to occur. That is, they wait for the hypnosis to happen by some change in awareness that will say “I am now hypnotized”. It is almost like trying to catch oneself falling asleep. This could delay your entry into the state of hypnosis you desire.

  • Simply relax and go with the flow
  • After a few times of being hypnotized you will be aware of when you are in hypnosis.
  • Enjoy the experience; it is like going on a very restful vacation.

What is Naturopathy ?

Naturopathy

The practice of naturopathy is as old as man himself. The commonality across world cultures is that we all used food, water and whole herbs for healing before the invention of modern medicine and the practice of intricate surgeries. In 1895, Dr. John Schell first utilized the term naturopathy to describe his holistic, natural approach to health and wellness, bucking the trends of the time of using “modern medicines” to “heal” patients.

Many different healing modalities fall under the broader realm of the title of naturopathy: nutritional counseling, homeopathy, iridology, aromatherapy, herbal therapy, hypnosis, massage and acupressure/acupuncture, magnet therapy, etc.

The mid-20th century saw a movement bringing alternative medicines and naturopathy to the forefront once again. This movement started along the East coast and has slowly made its way to encompass the country in its entirety. At this time, the practice of naturopathy is enjoying a period of growth and development among practitioners as more people seek out healthier alternatives to modern medicines and surgeries which often later prove harmful (and in some cases even deadly).

Practitioners of naturopathy abide by the Hippocratic Oath which insists upon the practice of ethical medicinal treatment–“Do no harm.” However, naturopaths are NOT medical doctors (although they are required to obtain degrees–and even licensure in some states). The naturopathic ideology only allows for the employment of modalities and techniques which are NATURAL in origin (i.e. the use of herbal remedies, changes in nutrition, sleep, meditation, exercise, etc.).

Like all naturopaths we, at Wholistic Wellness Associates, believe fervently in the body’s ability to heal and know that natural methods which include herbs, proper nutrition and exercise will promote healing within the body under even the most illness ravaged conditions. All naturopaths ultimately encourage these natural remedies in order to help clients maintain a state of homeostasis—or balance—within their bodies and their lives. Above all, we remind others that the body is a remarkable self-healing engine. Incredible as it sounds, your body WANTS to heal and by engaging in a lifestyle which restores balance your body will begin to return to its natural state of health! It is for this reason that we, as naturopaths, do not fall into the traditional trap of calling what we do “curing”. We help to encourage your body to do what it is naturally inclined to do…heal.

Naturopaths go straight to the cause of an illness. Instead of masking symptoms, as many medications are intended to do, naturopathic methods address the root of the problem. Naturopaths see clients as a “whole” and facilitate healing in the body by eliminating toxins and working with modalities that encourage your body’s natural latent healing to occur, whether that be through the use of herbs, acupressure, hypnosis, etc.

Because we, as naturopaths, see clients for the individuals they are, we realize that not every modality or herbal remedy will work for every person regardless of whether or not they are experiencing the same issues. Every body is different and requires a unique approach that is tailor made to complement that body’s natural healing abilities/tendencies.

We, at Wholistic Wellness Associates, believe that we are able to assist people in their healing by giving them the tools they need to make good health choices.

Dear Patty,

I would like to express my deep appreciation for the wonderful healing journey you afforded me. There was so much going on in my body that I was no longer in touch with myself. After my consultation (which was in itself so healing) I followed your instructions and it was a very short time before I began to feel better in my body and spirit. I have developed a new relationship with my diet and it was such an easy transformation. I love what I take into my body and my body is loving me right back! You are an amazing healer, and a fine human being. Keep up the good work.
